My Final Resting Place -馬偕的詩

這是馬偕醫師(Dr. George Leslie Mackay)(1844-1901)的詩,好幾年前在一個音樂會中知道的,馬偕醫師曾經向上帝宣誓,希望能讓他留在福爾摩沙:“Once again I promise you, though it means suffering unto death, I wish to spend my life here, in this place I have chosen, to be used of you. May God help me”(在我的另一個部落格有台語羅馬拼音版 https://ohgigian.blogspot.com/2022/03/blog-post_96.html

在他的晚年, 他還寫下這首詩:My Final Resting Place

How dear is Formosa to my heart!
On that island the best of my years have been spent.
How dear is Formosa to my heart!
A lifetime of joy is centered here.
I love to look up to its lofty peaks,
down into its yawning chasms,
and away out on its surging seas.
How willing I am to gaze upon these forever!
My heart's ties to Taiwan cannot be severed!
To that island I devote my life.
My heart's ties to Taiwan cannot be severed!
There I find my joy.
I should like to find a final resting place within sound of its surf,
and under the shade of its waving bamboo.
